The year before bar/bat mitzvah, students enrolled in Emeth’s youth education program, Beit Sefer, receive additional directed instruction in becoming bar/bat mitzvah.
Students preparing for bar/bat mitzvah become knowledgeable Jews through their training, which includes learning Shabbat prayers and how to lead a service; learning how to prepare a D’var Torah (sermon based on Torah), and developing an increased awareness of their responsibilities to the greater community in the performance of mitzvot (good deeds). The celebration of a bar/bat mitzvah, coming of age in Judaism, is held during a Shabbat morning service.
